The Welby Arms (Free House) is a delightful village pub which can be found in the heart of the village of Allington, which is a few miles off the A52 outside Grantham and heading towards Nottingham, and also a few miles from the A1. There is parking at the rear, and if like us, you were staying at Allington Manor, then a few minutes walk. Open 7 days a week, and serving both Bar and Restaurant food, there is plenty to choose from when you visit for a ‘pie and a pint’.

We were greeted with a friendly “Welcome”, and asked what we would like to drink. Service was prompt and very friendly, and when we asked to order food, we were offered the choice of eating in the Bar area or in the Restaurant area. We opted for the Bar as there were a fair few people enjoying a pint and creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Truthfully, as much as I like quiet because of my HF Autism, I do like to enjoy a positive atmosphere as well.

I ordered Scampi and Chips and my husband ordered Fish and Chips. The food was brought out to our table within 10 minutes, pipping hot. I was offered Tartar Sauce, and within 10 minutes my plate was as good as licked clean. I had a pint of lime and lemonade to accompany my meal and Greg had a pint. All in all, it was a very enjoyable meal. I think the total came to approx £37, so the best part of £18.50 per head.

As a gay man, and part of a Civil Partnership, I am always slightly wary of being in public places, especially when it is just the 2 of us. That said, I did not need to worry as we were welcomed in as ‘Joe Public’ and that will always help me to relax.
